Wilhelmus Meijer, in archieven vaak geschreven als ‘Meyer’, is geboren in 1838 in het jachthuis op het Montferland bij Zeddam als zoon van Frans Meijer en diens tweede echtgenote Bernardina Bolder. Vanaf de zomer van 1830 woont het gezin Meijer hier, want vader Frans is ‘opziener der jagt’ en in dienst van de Von Hohenzollerns. Willem komt uit een gezin met negen broers en zussen, waaronder halfbroer Laurens, de latere rentmeester op Huis Bergh . De zussen Maria (Laurentia )en Hendrika (Dominica )zijn als non werkzaam in respectievelijk Maastricht en Borgloon in België.
Zoon Willem groeit dus op te midden van de Montferlandse bossen. Hij gaat naar de lagere school in Zeddam, die goed bekend staat bij de inspectie.
In 1842 schrijft de inspecteur van onderwijs Wijnbeek over de school:
“Te Zeddam is eene vrij goede school, beide wat lokaal en onderwijs aanbelangt. Er gaan ook meer dan 200 kinderen school. De onderwijzer J. Smids wordt geholpen door een geschikt ondermeester, W. Wouters; de eerste is Protestantsch, de laatste Roomsch, terwijl de bevolking voor de eene helft Protestantsch en voor de andere helft Roomsch is. Vanaf 1855 studeert Willem wijsbegeerte op het kleinseminarie De Kuilenberg te Culemborg en daarna theologie op het grootseminarie Rijsenburg te Driebergen. In 1862 wordt hij in de gemeente Culemborg ingeschreven als ingezetene.

Wilhelmus Meijer, often written in archives as 'Meyer', was born in 1838 in the hunting lodge on the Montferland near Zeddam,the Netherlands, province of Gelderland as the son of Frans Meijer and his second wife Bernardina Bolder. The Meijer family lived here from the summer of 1830, in the mids of the woods because father Frans was 'superintendent of the hunt' and in the service of the Von Hohenzollerns, the owners of castle Bergh at s-Heerenberg and its possesions. Willem comes from a family with nine brothers and sisters, including half-brother Laurens, who later became steward at Huis Bergh. Sisters Laurentia and Dominica work as nuns in Maastricht and Borgloon in Belgium respectively.
Son Willem grows up in the middle of the Montferland forests. He goes to the primary school in Zeddam, which is well known to the inspectorate.
In 1842, the inspector of education Wijnbeek wrote about the school:
“In Zeddam is a fairly good school, both in terms of local and education. More than 200 children also go to school there. The teacher J. Smids is helped by a suitable submaster, W. Wouters; the former is Protestant, the latter Roman Catholic, while the population is half Protestant and the other half Roman Catholic.”
From 1855 onwards, Willem studied philosophy at the minor seminary De Kuilenberg in Culemborg and then theology at the major seminary Rijsenburg in Driebergen. In 1862 he was registered as a resident in the municipality of Culemborg.
